The summer crush at Bowl and Pitcher thins out after Labor Day. The kayak rentals at Nine Mile Recreation Area close on September 15, the swim beach empties, and the parking lot at the Wilbur Trailhead stops filling by 9 a.m. That is the point most residents feel the neighborhood shift back into its off-season rhythm.
If you live in Suncrest or anywhere along the Highway 291 corridor, that shift is the good part. Fall around Nine Mile Falls is not a season you have to drive anywhere to enjoy. Almost everything worth doing between mid-September and late October sits within a six-mile stretch of 291, from the trailheads on the south end up through Clark's Corner and the shops at the Suncrest Outpost.
The argument of this post is small and practical: you do not need a plan for a fall Saturday here, you need a route. Below is the one we hand to friends.
The Trail Update Worth Knowing About
Most residents know Riverside State Park by its two big front doors, Bowl and Pitcher and the Nine Mile Recreation Area. The quieter story this fall is what has been happening in the middle, at the Trautman Ranch Conservation Area.
The 275.8-acre parcel sits in the heart of Riverside State Park, acquired in 2015 through Spokane County's Conservation Futures Program with help from the Inland Northwest Land Conservancy and the Trautman Family, and is managed by Riverside through an agreement between the county and Washington State Parks. For years it was a maze of cow paths, user-built routes, and old ranch roads that even locals had trouble following.
That is changing. Washington State Parks describes the trail system there as newly completed, and the state's own January hike promotion for the property runs a 1.6-mile route through the Trautman Conservation Area on the newly completed trail system, with wildlife viewing along the way. Access is from the Carlson Road Trailhead, which requires a Discover Pass. If you have not been on this section since the formalization work, it is a different walk than the one you remember.
A few other quiet-season notes worth carrying:
- The Centennial Trail's western end sits right here. The paved trail runs 40 miles to the Washington-Idaho line, and 13 of those miles are inside Riverside State Park between Spokane Falls Community College and the Nine Mile Recreation Area.
- The Nine Mile Recreation Area day-use and boat launch stay open through October 31, and the dump station closes mid-October.
- The Equestrian Campground is open seasonally from April 1 to October 31, and the day-use area stays open through December 15 weather permitting.
- The Spokane House Interpretive Center at Nine Mile Falls, which covers the early fur trade and its effects on the Native American population of the area, keeps Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend hours, so if you have out-of-town family visiting in October, plan for a walk-by rather than a tour.
Dates Already On The Calendar
Two things anchor the fall social calendar for people who actually live here. Put them in your phone now, because neither shows up in the tourist guides.
Suncrest Fall Vendor & Craft Fair — Saturday, September 19, 2026 The fair runs 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Clark's Corner, 5919 Hwy 291, with free admission and more than 85 vendors including artisan crafters, handmade goods, seasonal décor, and treats. It is walkable from most of Suncrest and it is the one day a year the parking lot on that stretch of 291 gets tight.
Stonelodge Fall Festival — October weekends Stonelodge in Nine Mile Falls runs its Fall Festival on multiple October weekends, including October 3–4, October 10–11, and October 24–25 in 2026. If you have kids in the Nine Mile Falls School District, this is the local pumpkin-patch-and-hay-ride weekend most families default to.
First Day Hike prep Not a fall event, but the sign-up window opens in autumn. Washington State Parks hosts its Riverside First Day Hike from the Wilbur Trailhead on the Centennial Trail on the Saturday closest to December 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration fills fast.
If you want to give back to the trails you use, the Washington Trails Association has been running work parties at Trautman focused on formalizing the trail system, improving the Meadow Trail connector near the Trautman Barns, and decommissioning older routes. It is one of the few volunteer days where you can see the change in the ground under your boots the next weekend.
The 291 Stop List
Here is the part every generic Spokane blog gets wrong. They send you to Bowl and Pitcher and stop. A Saturday that actually feels like Nine Mile Falls involves at least three of the following, in some order, along 291.
| Stop | What it is | Why residents keep going back |
|---|---|---|
| North Wild Coffee | Coffee shop on N Nine Mile Rd | The morning warmup before a Centennial Trail walk. Consistently strong reviews from neighbors on the local rating sites. |
| The Tin Cup Cafe and Country Store | Cafe and country store | Old-school breakfast; the "country store" side is where you grab a card for a neighbor's birthday. |
| Nine Mile Store | Grocery and general store | The gas-and-groceries stop before heading up to Long Lake; also happens to be a dog groomer. |
| Sundance Bistro | Sit-down restaurant | The default local dinner when you do not want to drive into Spokane. |
| Wagon Wheel Bar & Grill | Bar and grill | Casual after a hike or a day on the water. |
| Hot Toddys 291 Brewhouse | Neighborhood brewhouse | Where residents actually end up on a Friday. |
| Eagle's Nest Espresso | Drive-through espresso | The commuter's version of a coffee break. |
| Landt Farms Sporting Clays | Sporting clays course | Fall opens up cooler mornings, which is when the course really comes into its own. |
| Willow Bay RV Resort & Marina | Marina and RV resort | Long Lake access if you still have a boat in the water in October. |
None of these places are secrets to anyone who has lived here two winters. The trick is treating them as a loop. Coffee at North Wild, an hour on the Centennial Trail from the Wilbur Trailhead, back down to the craft fair at Clark's Corner, and dinner at Sundance Bistro. That is a fall Saturday you can defend to anyone.
One Heads-Up For October Drivers
If you take 7 Mile Road between the highway and the bridge, plan around the ongoing utility work. Starting Monday, July 13, 7 Mile Rd was closed between 9 Mile Rd (Hwy 291) and the 7 Mile bridge for sewer installation at the Sundance Meadows Development, with work expected to be completed at the beginning of September. If timelines slip, the workaround most residents are using is Charles Road across the river, then Carlson Road, which also happens to drop you at the Trautman trailhead. There is a small silver lining in most detours.
While we are on driving notes: during wildfire evacuations earlier in the summer, Riverside State Park trails and trailheads south of Seven Mile Road were closed, along with the trailheads at Indian Painted Rocks and Knothead Valley, and the entire Little Spokane River Natural Area. Fall weather usually reopens things, but check the Riverside alerts page before you drive out to a trailhead you have not visited in a while.
What Ties This Together
There is a specific pleasure to living somewhere that empties out after Labor Day but does not shut down. The trails get quieter without going away. The restaurants keep their kitchens open. A craft fair and a fall festival land on the calendar without any real effort on your part. And the same six-mile stretch of 291 that serves as your commute becomes, in October, a route through most of what you moved out here for in the first place.
If you have friends in Spokane who keep asking what there is to do in Nine Mile Falls, this is the Saturday to show them. Start with a Trautman loop, hit Clark's Corner for the vendor fair on the 19th if the timing works, and end at Hot Toddys 291. They will understand the appeal without you having to explain it.
When you are ready to talk about a home in Suncrest, along the lake, or on acreage north of the dam, Inland Empire Home Team at CENTURY 21 Beutler & Associates is a phone call away. We live on this route too, and we would be glad to help you find a place that puts you on it. Explore Properties when you are ready.
